Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) approved four new English language test results for Student Direct Stream (SDS) applicants.
Beginning August 10, 2023, Canada will be accepting English language test results of four tests. These tests are helpful in proving the candidate’s English language skills for reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
Following are the minimum score requirements for the new English language proficiency tests for SDS applicants:
CELPIP General – The score should be equivalent to the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) of 7 in all four abilities.
CAEL – Minimum score of 60 points
PTE Academic – Minimum score of 60 points
TOEFL iBT – Minimum score of 83 points
Here are brief highlights of the new English language tests for SDS applicants, effective August 10, 2023.
CELPIP – General
Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) is the leading language test to evaluate the applicant’s English language speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills. CELPIP (General) is an IRCC-approved English language proficiency test for Student Direct Stream and permanent residency applications. It is a single three hours test without a separate session for evaluation of speaking.
CAEL
Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL) IS Canada’s standardized English language test to assess the applicant’s language proficiency. It is a well-established English language test for admission to colleges and universities in Canada. CAEL is suitable for academic requirements at educational institutions.
PTE Academic
The Pearson Test of English Academic is an online test to measure the English language skills of foreign applicants. PTE Academic aims to evaluate the language proficiency of students aspiring to learn in English-speaking countries such as Canada. Students can take the PTE test at home or office environment. The test evaluates the applicant’s reading, speaking, writing, and listening skills in the English language.
TOEFL iBT
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standard test to measure the English language proficiency of non-native speakers intending to apply to institutions in English-speaking countries. TOEFL iBT is an exhaustive English language test having a three hours duration. Colleges and universities approve The TOEFL iBT as proof of proficiency in the English language.
