A new method to process TFWP applications is on the anvil for some foreign workers.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is considering the implementation of its December 2022 measure for TFWP participants. It will facilitate foreign workers applying for a second work permit for the same employer and occupation.
IRCC aims to mitigate labor shortages, minimize application inventories, and enhance client service through various measures. Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) support these objectives by streamlining the renewals of work permits under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP).
The new method to streamline TFWP applications by foreign workers will pull the applications from the Global Case Management System into relevant folders. However, there will be no automation of the process. IRCC aims to consider a novel approach for foreign workers returning to the same occupation and the employer. The process will benefit TFWP applicants applying from within Canada or abroad.
The number of foreign workers applying for two or more work permits is thriving. Between January 2017 and August 2022, 71,955 foreign workers applied for work permit renewals. These workers had two or more work permits under the same occupation and from the same employer. IRCC is confident in using the additional measure to help such foreign workers.
