Statistics Canada’s latest report confirms the highest-ever population growth in Canada’s population.
Canada’s population stands at a record-high number of over 39.5 million as of January 1, 2023. The latest Statistics Canada report observes an addition of over one million people to Canada’s population during 2022. Canada’s population grew by 1,050,110 from January 1, 2022, to January 1, 2023.
Canada recorded the highest-ever growth in its population in sixty-five years. In 2022, the growth rate was 2.7 percent. At this rate, it will take 26 years to double Canada’s present population. The report attributes the population growth to immigration, which contributed 96.9 percent to the overall addition in a single year.
Record numbers of temporary and permanent residents
The year 2022 added over 600,000 new temporary residents to Canada’s population. It is the record number of new temporary residents arriving in Canada in a single year. The population growth spread uniformly across all Canadian provinces and territories. The population grew because of a notable rise in study permits, work permits, and asylum seekers.
Canada also welcomed a record number of over 437,000 new immigrants in 2022.
Canada is leaving no stone unturned in addressing the historic labor shortages. Immigration continues to be the primary resource to bridge the labor market gaps because of the low birth rate and aging population.
