Canada Conducts the Very First Express Entry Draw for Transport Occupations

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada held the first-ever Express Entry draw for the transportation category on September 19, 2023, inviting 1,000 candidates for permanent residence.

The maiden Express Entry draw to invite 1,000 transportation workers for permanent residence is part of Canada’s initiative to hold category-based Express Entry draws. The Express Entry draw aims to address the acute labor shortage in the transportation sector.

The new transportation category-based Express Entry draw issued 1,000 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) to candidates with a CRS cut-off of 435 points. The Express Entry draw required candidates to have at least six months’ skilled work experience in the designated transport occupations. IRCC proposes to emphasize the selection of newcomers with work experience in these occupations to address the acute demand for talent in the transportation sector.

Hon. Minister for Transport stressed the need to attract new immigrants with critical skills in transportation occupations. Canada is facing a historic labor shortage in the transportation sector, requiring more pilots, truck drivers, seafarers, and aviation mechanical engineers to boost the economy and enhance the supply chains.
